But they also have standardized testing days, proctored assessments, and peer visibility, kids know their classmates can see their screens. A homeschool parent has one, two, or five students and can theoretically watch them at any moment, but in practice:

  • The parent is running a household, working, or teaching a different grade level at the same time.
  • The student often works in their room, a library, a co-op space, or anywhere with wifi.
  • "Just looking up the word" and "asking ChatGPT to write the paragraph" look identical from across the room.
  • There's no external accountability loop. If a homeschooled student's essay gets turned in to a parent, the parent is often the only reader.

This is why well-meaning homeschool parents can get all the way to a portfolio review or a standardized test and discover, painfully, that their kid's day-to-day work hasn't been theirs for a while.

The good news is that preventing the problem is much easier than detecting it after the fact. What AI cheating actually looks like

3. The math walkthrough. The student takes a picture of a math problem, pastes it into a chatbot, and copies the step-by-step solution. Geometry proofs, algebra, and word problems are especially common.

4. The research shortcut. Instead of reading the assigned material, the student asks the AI to summarize it. This one is the most defensible and the most insidious , a good summary can substitute for a first read, but it can't substitute for the twenty-minute wrestle with a hard passage that actually builds comprehension.

5. The test assist. During a quiz or test, the student has a second tab or phone open and copies answers in real time.

Each of these has different prevention levers. A parent who assumes "cheating" just means #1 will miss the more common, more corrosive #2 and #4.

How to prevent online AI cheating

Layer 1: Separate practice from assessment

This is the single highest-leverage change a homeschool parent can make, and it costs nothing. The problem is that most homeschool work blurs the two. A worksheet at 10 a.m. might be practice or it might be the grade for the unit , the student doesn't always know, and neither does the parent.

Make the distinction explicit. Tell your child: "This next hour is practice. Use any tool you want, including AI, as long as you can explain what you did afterward. At 11, we're doing the quiz, and the rules are different."

Layer 2: Design assignments AI can't answer well

Some tactics that reliably break AI-only work:

  • Anchor prompts to specific texts the student actually read. "Compare the main character's decision in chapter 7 to…" is hard for AI to fake without the source, and the student can tell you what chapter 7 was about.
  • Ask for the student's process, not just the conclusion. "Show your scratch work. Then explain which step was hardest and why."
  • Include a local or personal component. "Interview your grandfather about a job he's held, then write…" cannot be ChatGPT-ed.
  • Add an oral defense. A five-minute conversation about a written assignment reveals almost immediately whether the student understands what they turned in. This is the single most effective AI check that exists, and it takes five minutes.

None of these require technology. They require slightly better assignment design , and most homeschool curricula don't do this by default, so the parent has to add it.

Layer 3: Choose AI tools that guide rather than answer

Not all AI is the same, and treating it as a single category is a mistake. A chatbot like ChatGPT or Gemini, in its default state, will give a student the answer. A well-designed educational AI will not , it will ask the student what they've tried, suggest a direction, point out where they're stuck, and refuse to produce the solution even when asked directly.
